Vanity versus Common Sense

When I tell people that I am an image consultant, I can almost mind-read their response. Inevitably, they are thinking "She must be a bit vain". Well guess what, I'm not vain but I do care about how I look and how I appear to others.

Vanity is defined as "the excessive belief in one's own abilities or attractiveness to others". Image, on the other hand, is defined as "the personal facade that one presents to the world". So we can safely assume that image and vanity is not the same thing.

Vanity is when you believe you are better than you are. Image is actually how other people see you and it includes a variety of factors, amongst them what you wear; personal grooming; tone of voice; the vocabulary that you use; and your facial expressions.

Given that we have just 15 seconds to make an impact on someone when we meet them for the first time, we had better believe that image matters and that caring about our personal image is actually sound business sense. People make assumptions about us based on limited information.

We can be assessed on a single physical characteristic because our appearance is seen to reflect who we are, what we are and what is important to us. So forget about vanity and use your personal image to make a positive, powerful impact on others.

SO ARE YOU A CAT OR A DOG?

One could be unkind and suggest that women are cats and men are dogs, as women pay more attention to personal grooming. However, this is no longer the case. Today's business men and women know that physical appearance is the first impression people have of who we are.

Choosing to ignore common personal grooming habits may indicate to those around you that you are not detail oriented; that you do not take pride in your work because you do not take pride in your personal appearance; or that you are not someone who wants to be taken seriously.

Personal grooming - also referred to as personal hygiene - is the act of taking care of your body through cleanliness and self care. To put your best foot forward, both men and women should have a personal grooming kit that they can use "on the run" if necessary.

Here is what your kits should include:

For Women: Anti perspirant; dry shampoo for hair; make up; brush or comb; tweezers; nail file and emery board; sewing kit; spare pair of pantyhose; toothbrush and small tube of toothpaste; breath freshener spray.

For Men: Anti perspirant; a clothes brush; hair brush or comb; nail clippers and nail scissors; tweezers; toothbrush and small tube of toothpaste; breath freshener spray.

When it comes to personal grooming, always choose to be a cat!

What is a Personal Brand?



No matter what type of business you are in, whether you are working for a large corporation or own your own company, it is of paramount importance that you identify and work on your Personal Brand.

In a nutshell, your Personal Brand is what sets you apart from the rest, what differentiates you from your peers and competitors.

If you work for a corporate enterprise, you use it to climb the corporate ladder. If you have your own company, you use it to become the market leader in your field. Your Personal Brand is how you market yourself to the rest of the world and it will influence how other people perceive you and behave towards you.

We all want to be experts in our field. Personal Branding is about becoming the OBVIOUS EXPERT  - the name is that on people's lips when they think about our area of business. Today, I want to get you started on thinking about your Personal Brand. In coming newsletters, I will share with you tips on how to develop your Persona Brand.

So where do you start??  The first step is deciding what it is that you do best and how to develop your special skills. What product or service are you going to offer? What is unique or different about that product or service? How are you going to differentiate your product or service from the others that are already available?

Not sure what you do best? My advice to you is to make passion your starting point. Whatever you do, you have to do it with passion! So think about what you do best, what you enjoy doing and how it can benefit others. If you struggle to identify your passion, try asking five of your closest friends what it is that you do best? I bet their answers might surprise you!

The next step is get down to the core of your Personal Brand by asking yourself these questions:
  1. WHY (Why are you doing what you are doing and what is the purpose)?
  2. WHAT (What are you going to offer and what are you going to do achieve your goal)?
  3. WHO (Who are you going to do it with)?
  4. WHEN (When is your deadline - when are you going to establish and market your Personal Brand)?
  5. HOW (How are you going to promote your Personal Brand so that others recognise you as the OBVIOUS EXPERT)?
If you get it right, Personal Branding can bring you many benefits including increased visibility and presence; increased revenue and bottom line; expansion into new business areas; and the ability to survive and thrive even during economic downturns.
